The open day on Saturday was a great success with 142 members of the public having a tour around the site all of whom were impressed with the facilities on offer.

Alongside this were Sculptureworks who were starting consultation for the Set in Stone Project. This project will work with 20 community groups to create pavers for the covered walkway based on Goole's heritage. They will be holding open sessions during September, more info on that soon.

Saturday also saw a performance by Faceless Theatre Company and young people from Goole of 'Conference of the Birds' a fabulous performance congratulations to all who took part.

A 'trailblazer' event in advance of the venue's opening in November...

CONFERENCE OF THE BIRDS

An outdoor theatre performance on Saturday 22nd August, at 2pm in Wesley Square. Young street theatre enthusiasts have been attending workshops everyday this week to create Saturday’s performance, which will be free of charge. The street performance, entitled Conference of the Birds, is a heady display of costumes, masks, music and movement. It is a funny, poignant and epic journey, telling the story of a group of birds who pluck up the courage to leave all they know behind and undertake a dangerous journey in a quest for change!

JUNCTION OPEN DAY

There will also be a series of tours around the site of Junction, the town's new arts venue. Tours will take place between 1pm and 4pm and anyone interested in seeing the building as it nears completion can sign up on the day. It's also a chance to ask any questions you might have about the project and find out about ways in which you can participate. Tours run from the building's entrance on Wesley Square / Paradise Place. The open day will also provide the opportunity to enquire/sign up for particpation projects such as Electric Youth Theatre, Vocalise singing group and a brand new Rock Music Workshop series...

YOUNG FILMMAKERS

In addition to the performance and site tours, local filmmaker Sheena Holliday will be working with two young film enthusiasts to document the show and to get local people’s responses to Junction on film. Beth Rae and Becky Stothert, who also participate in Electric Youth Theatre, will be working with Sheena to film local people talking about the venue, about the day’s performance and about the future of the town as a regional hot spot for culture and community. Beth and Becky will be learning some of the ins and outs of video and sound from Sheena, and asking passers by, participants and local shoppers to say a few words on film. The resulting footage will be shown at the launch of Junction in November.

We have lift off!

We have lift off!!

This week contractors from the company fitting the lift have been on site, and took 2 days to fit the lift which will take you from the ground floor level to the first floor. At first floor level you will be able to access the Community Room and the Auditorium Balcony.

The lift will now not be used until opening (we wouldn't want the painters and decorators spilling paint in it!!)

We are still scheduled for hand over of the site in October and are looking for an opening day on Saturday 7 November.

Gates Commission final opportunity

After a few weeks of consultations, Sculptureworks have nearly completed the ideas for designs on the gates.

So here is your last opportunity to have your say. Sculptureworks will be on Goole Market this Saturday 20 June from 1pm - 4pm to share their ideas so far.

Consultation sessions have taken place with: children aged 0 - 5 and their parents at Kingsway Childrens Centre, children and young people from Electric Youth Theatre and Vocalise singing group, young people from the Youth Inclusion Project, Art and Design students and History students from Vermuyden School, Year 1 and Year 5 from Marshlands Primary School, Goole Town Council's key stakeholders, Arts and Crafts group at Waterways Museum.

Art on The Gate

We need your ideas, themes, stories, dreams . . .

Goole Town Council has commissioned an artist from Sculptureworks to work with the local community to design and make gates that will form part of Junction, the new venue on Wesley Square.

As you can see Sculptureworks have a good track record of designing gates and fencing and incorporating local history, architecture and story.

We would like to invite you to come and met the artists to talk about your knowledge of the town and ideas for inclusion on The Gates. We will be holding an information event on Wednesday 10 June 6pm—8pm at The Gate Theatre, Dunhill Road, Goole. There will be a short presentation by the artists followed by an opportunity to talk the artist, or get creative and have a draw!

Gates Artist Appointed

We have appointed two artists to work on designing and fabricating the gates at the side of the building. Bernie Rutter and Denis O'Connor start community consultation this week, first meeting members of Boothferry Family and Local History Group. They will then work with around 8 community groups to get ideas to take forward to the final design.

Members of the public can have an input too, we are holding a consultation session on Saturday 30 May 10am - 4pm on a stall in Goole Market, come along and meet the artists and give your ideas. The final designs will be ready during June and we will hold another market stall for members of the public to come back and have a look. More information on that soon.

Artist Commission advertised

We are seeking an experienced visual artist to work with our Goole’s community to create designs for wrought iron/galvanised steel gates. The gates will be located at the front and back of the new arts and civic centre ‘Junction’ which is due to open in Autumn 2009. This building will replace the existing Gate Theatre and Goole Town Council offices in a multi-use building. The gates are very visible in a central area of Goole, and therefore a perfect opportunity for a public art commission.

Artist fee £5500 (to include 20 sessions community consultation, design fee and all artists personal expenses) plus a fabrication budget of £15000

Junction came out top in our consultation and the signage will also carry the name Goole Town Council, to highlight the civic function the building has.

Work continues to march ahead on site with the first floor now accessible, you can now look from the balcony into the auditorium.

Easter Egg Hunt

Before the schools broke up for Easter holidays, Goole Town Council and Houltons organised a creative easter egg hunt for children from YR 3 at Boothferry Primary School.

The children researched, designed and decorated easter eggs which were then hidden around the venue. They were given a guided tour and explanation of the buildings new facilities, then in groups the children then had to find their way around the building and find their egg. Each child was presented with a chocolate easter egg by Houltons Construction.

In addition to this there were additional prizes for the best 'egg' related jokes - some really egg-cellent ones! only yolking!

We will have two site visits per month for stakeholders and members of the public. We are limited to the number of people we can get around the site pre-booking is essential. We welcome group visits but would ask for up to four representatives from any one group. Places are allocated on a first come first served basis. Site visits will take place:
